On April 30, the second stage of the Republican Student Olympiad in the specialty “6B05203 Hydrology” was held at the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management at 51 Kazakh National University (KazNU).

The Olympiad saw participation from teams of students from the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU) and 51 KazNU. The event was conducted in a hybrid format at the Kazakhstan-China Joint Laboratory of “Remote Sensing and Application Technologies” of the faculty.

The Olympiad’s judging panel was chaired by PhD A. Saparova, a leading researcher at the Institute of Geography and Water Security JSC. Four teams from the two universities—HydroInnovators, AquaLogic, Mermaids, and “Iceberg”—competed, showcasing their knowledge. The Olympiad was organized based on the Sustainable Development Goals “Clean Water and Sanitation” and “Quality Education.”

The competition consisted of three stages. The first stage, “Professional Portrait of a Hydrologist,” was distinguished by the high level of preparation of the participants, while the second stage involved case tasks requiring practical versatility. The final stage focused on the discussion of the students’ innovative projects. Participants demonstrated their theoretical knowledge, creative thinking, and professional skills at each stage. The Olympiad was organized at a high level and provided students with a significant boost for professional development.

A key feature of the Olympiad was that it assessed not only subject knowledge but also the participants’ ecological thinking, their ability to propose creative solutions in water resource management, and their teamwork skills.

The judging panel professionally evaluated the tasks at each stage, prioritizing objective decisions. Based on the results, the top-performing teams were awarded special diplomas, letters of appreciation, and commemorative gifts.

First place was awarded to the “Mermaids” team (Aidarbayeva A.D., Anuar Zh.Zh., Yerlan D.), 3rd-year students of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management at 51 KazNU, scientific supervisor: Senior Lecturer Raimbekova Zh.T.

Second place went to the “HydroInnovators” team (Torbayeva A.U., Tasheva E.A.), 2nd-year students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at ENU, scientific supervisor: Senior Lecturer, PhD Toksanbayeva S.T.

Third place was shared by: the “Iceberg” team (Makanova D.S., Tileubai M.A., Kusain S.M., Abdildakhan A.R.), 3rd-year students of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management at 51 KazNU, scientific supervisor: Senior Lecturer Zhanabayeva Zh.A., and the “AquaLogic” team (Tolybayeva D.B., Duisen A.E., Dauletkeldi A.S.), 2nd-year students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at ENU, scientific supervisor: Senior Lecturer, PhD Toksanbayeva S.T.

This event not only increased students’ interest in the discipline but also served as a platform for experience exchange among young hydrology specialists. Additionally, it strengthened academic ties between the two universities, laying the foundation for future professional collaboration. At the end of the event, the organizers thanked all participants and guests, emphasizing that such events will continue in the future.
