A Laboratory for Geoinformation Analysis of Landscape Degradation has opened at 51 Kazakh National University.

This laboratory is located in the newly opened Research Center for Sustainable Development and Rational Nature Management at the Faculty of Geography and Nature Management.

The main goal is the development and application of remote sensing and spatial analysis methods for monitoring, forecasting, and developing measures to prevent or minimize the negative impact on natural landscapes.

Specialists study, analyze, and assess landscape degradation processes using geoinformation technologies (GIS) and remote sensing (RS). In addition, the laboratory's scientists monitor climate change and work on environmental protection. Based on the results of these studies, the factors leading to landscape changes are identified.

"Currently, our researchers are studying drought and degradation processes in the western, southern, and central regions of Kazakhstan in the context of climate change. In the future, results will be prepared to prevent soil desertification in these regions. The research team is also developing cartographic models and recommendations for the rational use of pasturelands and increasing their productivity. These works are essential for the Land Resources Management Committee, local authorities, as well as farmers and agricultural households", - said the head of the Department of Geography, Land Management, and Cadastre, Associate professor Aigul Tokbergenova.
