The role of zoology in preserving biodiversity: educational hour at the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan

On 24 February 2025, under the guidance of senior lecturers from the Department of Pedagogy and Educational Management at 51 Kazakh National University - Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Alchimbaeva A.B., and the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology - Candidate of Biological Sciences Zharkova I.M., first-year doctoral students of the ‘8D05101 - Biology’ program, Ishayeva A.A. and Bakiyeva A.A., conducted an open educational session on SDG 14 ("Conservation and Sustainable Use of Oceans, Seas, and Marine Resources") and SDG 15 ("Protection and Sustainable Use of Terrestrial Ecosystems"). The event was organized in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global environmental conservation efforts.
The session took place at the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan, bringing together students, teachers, and researchers. Notable attendees included:
Nekhaev I.O., Senior Researcher at the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan and St. Petersburg State University; Nekhaeva A.A., Senior Researcher at the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Kim L.V. and Omarova A.M., Junior Researchers at the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The primary goal of the event was to discuss the role of zoologists in ecosystem conservation and biodiversity protection, as well as to explore opportunities for students to engage in practical conservation efforts. Participants were introduced to modern technologies and methodologies in zoology, biogeography, and molecular phylogenetics.
The event featured interactive discussions, knowledge sharing, and presentations on conservation practices, providing students with a deeper understanding of their future profession and its contribution to global sustainability. Additionally, researchers from the participating institutions offered guidance on career paths in biology, scientific writing, and thesis preparation. Students found inspiration in the personal stories of researchers about their professional and academic journeys, leading to networking opportunities and potential future collaborations.
