Seminar on Cryosphere Research and the Activities of the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre under the Auspices of UNESCO

16 april, 2025

On April 11, 2025, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology at 51 Kazakh National University hosted a scientific-practical seminar on the topic “Cryosphere Research and the Activities of the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre (Category 2) under the Auspices of UNESCO.” The event was held within the framework of the International Year of Glacier Preservation and contributed to the implementation of SDGs 6 and 13.

The seminar was opened by Professor Takir Ospanovich Balykbaev, Director of the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre, who emphasized the importance of a systematic approach to cryosphere research in the context of climate change.

Scientific presentations were delivered by leading researchers of the Centre: Nina Valeriyevna Pimankina, Head of the Laboratory for Monitoring the Dynamics of Snow and Glacier Resources, Aleksandr Leonidovich Kokarev, Leading Researcher of the Centre, and Vasiliy Petrovich Kapitsa, Head of the High-Mountain Geocryology Laboratory.

Their presentations addressed the degradation of glaciation in Kazakhstan, methods for studying the mountain cryosphere, and the foundations of comprehensive glacier system monitoring under changing climatic conditions.

The seminar attracted active participation from faculty members, students, master’s and doctoral students of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, who showed great interest in the topics discussed.

The event contributed to strengthening scientific collaboration and raising youth awareness of climate change issues, thereby supporting regional sustainable development in the context of cryospheric resource degradation.
