Academic Mobility Enriched with Knowledge and Experiences

9 april, 2025

My name is Zhansaya Zhumabekova, and I am a third-year student at 51 Kazakh National University, one of the most prestigious institutions in our country, where I am specializing in Oriental Studies. Currently, I am participating in an academic mobility program in Seoul, Republic of Korea, at Sookmyung Women’s University. The journey to this point has not been straightforward; it required extensive documentation, language improvement, and numerous preparatory steps. However, I can now confidently affirm that all efforts were worthwhile. I am profoundly grateful to my university, the faculty, and the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program for this opportunity. Studying abroad is a priceless experience that is not afforded to everyone.

I have found the education system in Korea particularly appealing, as it is characterized by a significant degree of freedom in course selection. Beyond the core subjects of my specialty, I have the opportunity to explore areas of personal interest. Consequently, I enrolled in economics courses and uncovered a wealth of new knowledge. One of the most impactful classes was an economics lecture, where the professor not only imparted theoretical knowledge but also demonstrated its relevance to our daily lives. Additionally, I found the taekwondo course designed for foreign students to be exceptionally engaging; such classes contribute to a dynamic and diverse learning experience.

I would also like to highlight the robust support system in place for international students. Each student had a designated advisor, to whom we could address any inquiries. Various activities were organized weekly, including visits to the national museum, the botanical garden, and picnics by the Hangang River. These events facilitated our adaptation to the new environment and deepened our understanding of the local culture.

Seoul has captivated me with its scale and splendor. During April, the cherry blossoms bloom, and we make a concerted effort to walk and appreciate nature. Namsan Tower evokes memories of Kok-Tobe in Almaty. We frequently hike, and I particularly recall our excursion to Mount Bulgoksan. My friends and I are actively exploring the city, exchanging cultural insights, and interacting with students from various countries, especially from Europe. This experience has been invaluable in broadening my horizons.

One of my most cherished memories was celebrating Nauryz abroad with Kazakh students from Yonsei University. The atmosphere that day was truly extraordinary; we donned traditional costumes, sang, and engaged in customary games. The aroma of baursak and pilaf rekindled memories of home. Even while away from our homeland, we were able to preserve and share our culture, instilling a sense of pride within us.

Initially, adapting was challenging, as Koreans tend to be more reserved and introverted. Over time, however, we forged new friendships and acclimated to the local culture. My proficiency in Korean has also improved markedly. I have discovered that the key to success is to be proactive and pursue new knowledge daily. This semester has been more than just another academic phase; it has been a genuine opportunity for personal growth, reflection, and the expansion of my horizons. I have gained confidence in my capabilities. I believe I have not only gained a deeper understanding of my homeland but have also opened myself to a world of endless possibilities. I am sincerely appreciative of the opportunity to develop and grow each day.
