Urban development in Kazakhstan: the prospects of the new city of Alatau were discussed at a meeting of the Student Discussion Club "POLITOLOG"

On April 4, 2025, an extended meeting of the Student Discussion Club "POLITOLOG" on the topic: "Urban development in Kazakhstan. New city of Alatau, its prospects" was held at the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science of the Kazakh National University named after 51. The event was held within the framework of the IV International Farabi Forum and aroused keen interest among students, teachers and invited experts.
The guests of honor of the meeting were:
- Bolat Amanzholovich Musylmanbekov - Head of the Department of Architecture and Urban Development of the Almaty Region;
- Asel Bolatovna Tolepbergenova - Deputy of the Maslikhat of the Almaty Region;
- Olga Aleksandrovna Simakova - Project Coordinator of the PF "Strategy";
- Samadov Aktamkul Rafikovich - Head of the Department of the Samarkand State University (Uzbekistan).
The meeting was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science, PhD in Philosophy Meyrbayev Bekzhan Berikbaevich. In his welcoming speech, he emphasized the relevance of the topic in light of the challenges of urbanization and the need for sustainable development. As a token of gratitude, the guests were presented with books by the great Eastern thinker, al-Farabi. The Dean expressed hope that the new city of Alatau would become the "virtuous city" that al-Farabi dreamed of - a space where justice, development and harmony between the state and society are at the forefront.
The keynote speaker was Bolat Amanzholovich Musylmanbekov, who presented the participants with a detailed presentation of the construction project for the new city of Alatau. He noted that the goal of the project is to relieve overpopulated Almaty, create favorable conditions for life and work, and form a new economic and administrative center in the region.
Key features of the Alatau project:
- Modern residential areas, business and administrative infrastructure;
- Development of business clusters, technology parks, and facilities to support entrepreneurship;
- Creation of educational institutions, cultural and leisure spaces;
- Innovative urban development technologies and sustainable environmental solutions.
The new city should become not just an urban object, but a space of the future, where comfort, progress and spiritual values are combined.
A meaningful discussion took place during the meeting. Students asked the guests questions about design principles, the environmental component, social infrastructure, and youth participation in urban development initiatives.
Of particular interest were the following questions:
- How is planning transparency and citizen participation ensured?
- What measures are envisaged to attract young professionals?
- What will be the environmental policy of the new city?
As a sign of respect and gratitude for participating in the discussion, members of the “POLITOLOG” club presented the guests with a book about the club's activities, reflecting the long history of student analytical and educational work, and also expressed confidence that young people should actively participate in shaping the appearance of future cities in Kazakhstan. Such meetings become an important platform for dialogue between students, experts and government officials, forming an active civic position in future political scientists.
