Roundtable discussion on the topic "Climate change – a global threat or new opportunities?"

17 march, 2025

Climate change has become a global problem not only for scientists and ecologist but also for politicians, entrepreneurs, and ordinary citizens. Rising air temperatures, changes in precipitation levels, increasing droughts, and extreme natural events have a significant impact on agriculture. For Kazakhstan, as an agricultural country, these changes directly affect food security and economic stability.

In this regard, as part of pedagogical practice and in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-13 "Climate Action"), on March 13, 2025, a roundtable discussion on "The impact and prospects of climate change on agriculture and crop production" was organized at the Kazakh Research Institute of Agriculture and Plant Growing by first-year doctoral students of the 8D05105 - "Biotechnology" program at KazNU (A. A. Amangeldiyeva, U. A. Manapkanova, M. N. Nurzhuma, and N. K. Rykhmanova). The event focused on the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector, ways to minimize its consequences, adaptation strategies, and modern innovative solutions.

Key topics of the event:

🔹 Climate change and agriculture: The impact of rising temperatures and unstable precipitation on soil fertility;

🔹 Soil fertility preservation: Efficient use of mineral fertilizers, sustainable agro-technologies;

🔹 The role of biotechnology: Increasing plant drought resistance, developing new crop varieties;

🔹 Green technologies: Water-saving methods, eco-friendly farming, organic agriculture;

🔹 Pest control: Use of bio-agents and innovative plant protection methods;

🔹 Sustainable agriculture development: New research and climate adaptation strategies.

During the event, leading scientists, experts, and young researchers discussed the impact of climate change on agriculture. Among the speakers were renowned specialists in agrochemistry, agriculture, and biotechnology, including Zhumagali Ospanbayev, Almagul Malimbayeva, and Raushan Yerzhebayeva. Additionally, young scientists from the Kazakh Research Institute of Agriculture and Plant Growing, the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry named after U. Uspanov, and the Kazakh Research Institute of Plant Protection and Quarantine named after Zh.Zhiembaev presented their studies.

Climate change is a critical issue that will impact future generations. How can we adapt? What solutions does science and innovation offer? Let’s find the answers together!
